Called the Queen of Hill Stations picturesque, green Udhagamandalam better known, as Ooty is the most popular hill station in the South India. Located in the Western ghat's at a height of 2240m, Udhagamandalam is the headquarters of the Nilgiris district where the two ghat's ranges meet. Nature has been generous with this region, which is by far the most beautiful in the state. Apart from coffee and tea plantations, trees like confiers, eucalyptus, pine and wattle dot the hillside in Udhagamandalam and its encirons.
Where is Ooty
Ooty (Ootacamund), also called Udhaga-mandalam is situated in the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve is the most popular Hill station in South India. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR) which connects Mettupalayam and Udagamandalam is a UNESCO Heritage Site. It provides a scenic view of Nilgiri Hills.

Botanical Garden Ooty
Tamilnadu Government, department of Horticulture maintains this botanical garden in Ooty. Opened in 1847 by Marquis of Tweedale the Ooty Botanical Garden serves as a prime tourist attraction in Ooty. Spread over an area of 55 acres, this garden is home to rarest tree species, lush greenery, ornamental flowers, Italian style garden, amazing tree species and 20 million year old fossilized tree. One can find wide variety of never seen before flowers, bushes, plants, fern house, orchids and much more in this Botanical Garden.
There is a beautiful green lawn and there are trees collected from different parts of the world. There is a Italian garden and Lilly pond with color full flowers.
The Botanical Garden is divided into many sections and each section has its own theme planned out. Few of the sections in this botanical garden are:
This section within Ooty Botanical Garden comprises of lower lawns and entrance. A fern house is located within the Lower Garden which houses more than 127 species of fern plants. Some rare species of trees and plants can be seen in Lower Garden.
New Garden within the Botanical Garden Ooty is a newly constructed and planned garden developed by the Government of Tamil Nadu for adding more colors to the existing garden. This garden houses some rare varieties of never seen before roses, flower beds, carpet beds, natural ponds with beautiful aquatic plants.
Italian Garden is one major attraction of Botanical Garden in Ooty which is planned and developed according to the Italian pattern. This section of the botanical garden houses rare Italian species including beautiful flowers and trees.
There are few nurseries in Ooty Botanical Garden which comprises of 8 glass houses that introduce and breed various rare species. The terrace within the nurseries are used for growing these plants and also for collecting seeds.
The highlight of this garden is also the variety of roses that have been planted here to add to the beauty of this garden.
Annual Flower Show at Botanical Garden
The Ooty Botanical Garden holds the Annual Flower Show which is held in May every year and attracts many tourists and botanists from all over the world. This beautiful garden also holds Annual Summer Festival, an added attraction for tourists.
Summer temperature is rarely higher than 25°c with a minimum of 10°c and winter is are distinctly cooler with a high of 21°c and a low 5°c. Curiously enough, this slice of paradise remained unknown to the great southern dynasties and it took the British to discover it in the early 1800s.
